Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded players for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton made comments following Denver's historic comeback win over the New York. The coach remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson instead of Dart.

"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.

Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M contract.
  • The team went 4-11 in his debut year before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the player from suffering an injury.

If Wilson remained on the roster by spring 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, marking the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his mentor.
