Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
